What to Wear for Your Fall Mini Session in the Reno/Tahoe Area | Lifestyle Photography by Kelli Price Photography

It’s the perfect time of the year to schedule your family photo session. If you have little ones, or grumpy hubbies, a full hour long session may not be in the cards for you. And that’s OK! Most photographers offer Mini Sessions during set holidays.

What are Mini Sessions: These sessions are scheduled at a set date & location and are 20 minutes of photography fun for your family! It is ideal for families that simply want updated family portraits or 1-2 new stellar family photos for holiday cards. It's just long enough to get a few posed photos of the family, candids of the kids, and individual photos of each of the children. You will receive an online gallery with 8 fully-edited, digital images and the option to purchase additional images.

What to Wear for your Mini Session

Booking the session was the easy part, now you are thinking, "What do I Wear"?! Similar to The Fountain of Youth, we are always on a quest for the perfect family photo attire. Don't worry, you are not alone! The most common question I receive for family photos is, "What to Wear"? Here are a few tips & things to keep in mind!

  1. Coordinate, not matching. Long gone are the days of everyone wearing a white shirt and matching. Instead, pick a couple of colors and choose clothes that will fit in this color scheme. I suggest starting with your "pickiest dresser" and build from there.

  2. Don’t forget accessories. Accessories not only add to your outfit but they can be fun to use in photos.

  3. Plan ahead. Trust me, your photo session will sneak up on you! You may think certain clothes will fit your kids or that one dress is clean. If you wait until the day before you may run into an issue of clothes not fitting, being dirty etc.

  4. Say no to characters. Yes, your little one may love their 'Moana' shirt but you may want to skip it for the family photo session. Just like patterns, characters on shirts can be distracting.

  5. Textures are your friend. Everybody loves their cotton fitted shirt. However, in photographs add textures & layers like scarves or belts to add a little more to the image. Don’t shy away from different textures or being bolder than usual.

  6. Consider your background. Your session will be outside, so please dress appropriately for the weather.
